Jessica Boafo

This award is presented to students of Indigenous ancestry (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) on the basis of academic achievement and previous and/or intended future contribution to the Indigenous community.

Boivin is a member of the Deninu K’ue First Nation in the Northwest Territories. She is also an interdisciplinary artist who creates paintings, poetry and image-based stories to bridge gaps between bioethics and aspects of Indigenous culture. Boivin is the student editor of the Indigenous Healthcare section in Ars Medica, a journal of medicine, the arts and humanities. Her painting, Sharing Bioethics, was included in the The Body Electric digital art exhibit at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s International Conference on Residency Education and is now on display in the Faculty of Medicine’s Enrolment Services office.

University of Toronto President Meric Gertler presented Lisa Boivin as well as fellow recipient James Bird (Arts and Science) with this honour during the President's Award for the Outstanding Indigenous Student of the Year Ceremony and Reception on December 6 at the First Nations House.
